“Love Beyond The Grave” – first impression

What is this drama about?

He Simu, the 400-year-old Spirit Queen, occasionally goes to the mortal world for vacations. She enjoys spending time among humans and observing their ordinary daily lives. During her current visit, she finds herself in the middle of a war and meets a brave and cunning young general, Duan Xu, at whose side she spots a sword that has been missing for 300 years. The sword chooses its owner, so He Simu desperately tries to find out who the general really is and whether he will help her regain her five senses.

I’ve been very worried about the fate of this drama since the cast was announced. I adore Chen Feiyu, but I admit I’m not a fan of Dilraba, especially her duets with younger actors. After 10 episodes, it’s not bad. Dilraba perfectly fits the statuesque, cold, and elderly Spirit Queen. You could say she’s perfect for the role. In the first few episodes, I like the dynamic between her and the general. They’re very suspicious of each other, distrusting each other while flirting. I’m not sure how it will play out when we move into the more romantic phase. I’m afraid we won’t experience fireworks between them. Personally, I don’t like older-younger romances, so I’ll probably still be critical of this relationship, but who knows, maybe it won’t be as bad as I expect.

The drama is visually very pleasing, and the music is also pleasant. The story unfolds very slowly, but I’ve gotten used to that in a 40-episode Chinese drama. Of course, as an uncritical Chen Feiyu fan, I’ll probably watch this drama until the end. For now, some of the fight scenes, such as the one with the birds in episode 3 and the general’s attack on the enemy camp in episode 8, deserve special attention.
