What is this drama about?
A fox demon appears at the Wei estate and plans to kill the bride. This brings four demon hunters to the Wei family, each intent on capturing the fox demon, but each for different reasons. Among them are two sisters, Lu Wuyi and Wu Wangyan, from the fox demon clan; Wu Shiguang, who, by capturing the demon, hopes to get closer to the powerful Dragon Deity; and the innocent Ji Ling, with the strong warrior Li Jie at his side. Their fates begin to intertwine uncontrollably. Each of them harbors a multitude of secrets, especially concerning their pasts. It soon becomes clear that they have more in common than they thought.

I must admit, I was looking forward to this drama primarily because of Tian Jiarui’s participation. He is a young and versatile actor whom I have been following since “My Journey to You.” In “Veil of Shadows,” he once again demonstrated his incredible charisma on screen and how well he thrives in such diverse roles. He and Yu Jinyi formed a wonderful duo. They form a beautiful couple with incredible chemistry. I’ll admit, I love their scenes the most, and their story is the most heartwarming. The second pair, played by Joseph Zeng and Chen Duling, also perform well. They look good together and you can tell they get along on set. They’re just as important as the first pair, and that makes me happy because there’s a balance in the characters.

When I found out who the director and screenwriter were (the same person), I knew it would be a feast for the eyes. His previous dramas, “My Journey to You” (read here) and “Fangs of Fortune” (read here), were very good (though not perfect) and set a certain standard for this director’s work. This quality and style are evident in “Veil of Shadows.” The shots are beautiful, the cast is stunning, and the costumes and fight scenes are incredibly impressive. The plot is very twisty, and the action is so fast-paced that I wasn’t bored for a minute.

In my opinion, it’s a very good, and above all, beautiful, adventure drama. We’ll see if it’s as great until the end, because “Fangs of Fortune” lost some steam towards the end. You can expect absolutely anything from this director/screenwriter, so I’m not expecting a happy ending, at least not for everyone.
