I’ve been having a drama crisis lately, which is why I haven’t been around much this past week. I didn’t want to watch anything, I started some dramas, but I couldn’t get into them. I had a momentary drama burnout. I started the drama Back From The Brick with no expectations, it was just another drama I wanted to check out. After 9 episodes, I’m having a blast. The beginning was a bit slow, and the main couple kind of lacked charisma. It wasn’t until the new characters joined that it started to get interesting, but mostly funny.
What is the drama about?
On his wedding day, the Ancient Dragon Tian Yao was painfully betrayed by his fiancée. It turned out that this cruel woman approached him only to kill him and get the magical scales. They are supposed to save the life of her true lover. Unfortunately, the most important dragon scale that protects the heart slipped from her hands and accidentally ended up in a newborn girl. The dragon is reborn as a weak magical being and promises himself never to fall in love again. After 20 years, he meets a young girl, Yan Hui, who carries his magical scale in her heart. With her help, Tian Yao can regain his former body and powers.
The story is really engaging. It’s such a real fairy tale, but I must admit that it takes a few moments to get into its atmosphere. The world of this story is divided into the world of humans and the world of magical beings (Spirits), which is why some strange mutated specimens often appear. In general, the drama is pleasing to the eye, and the main actors are very attractive.
I had concerns about the chemistry of the main actors, but it’s not bad. I’ve never seen them in any other production, so it’s hard for me to judge whether the dragon’s lack of charisma is a depressive state after abandonment or the actor’s style. The further the story gets, the more interesting it gets, but that’s thanks to the new characters we meet along the way. My favorite is Shadow Spirit. I don’t know what he’s on about finding the perfect couple, but he’s acting like a couples therapist. His scenes bring me to tears. I’ve never been a big fan of this actor, but here he totally bought me. He is cute and very funny. There is also the potential for a second love couple, and I have to admit that I count on them more than on the main characters. There are sparks, especially in Mr. Feng, who is in love. Well, we’ll see what comes of it.
The drama has a beautiful opening, visually and musically, so it’s worth paying attention to. I must admit I’m curious what the creators of this story will serve us during these 40 episodes. I try not to watch such long dramas, but as you can see, it’s not always successful.
